On Saturday 13 March, our team at Edith Cavell Surgery delivered an outstanding Covid-19 vaccination pop-up clinic at Streatham Mosque (also known as South London Islamic Centre), vaccinating 224 people in under 3 hours!!
Streatham Mosque is attended by some of our most vaccine hesitant local population – so this is a great example of tackling health inequalities in the community, with community leaders.
One of the attendees was an 87 year old lady with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Her son explained that she had been requested by the GP to attend for her CV19 vaccination a couple of times, but these times were inconvenient to her. She felt great comfort in the flexibility offered by our clinic in the Mosque (walk-in anytime between 1.15pm and 4pm) together with it being a place that she recognised and trusted. Her son said that she would likely not have had her vaccine if it wasn’t for our pop-up clinic.
Another local patient who migrated from Somalia over 15 years ago had been extremely hesitant due to rumours he had been receiving via Whatsapp and social media. Walking past the Mosque, he was intrigued that his regular place of worship was offering the vaccine, and returned with a couple of family members to have the vaccination together.
A number of attendees of the local churches and synagogue also had their vaccinations with us on Saturday, thanks to the Chairman of Trustees at Streatham Mosque sharing our invitation via Faiths Together in Lambeth. Many other wonderful stories captured and encountered throughout the day.
We also hosted a number of local guests including:
We hope that this will encourage many more people who may be worried about having the vaccine to come forward when invited.
